Ionic solids are made up of a vast network of cations and anions held together by strong ionic bonds in a repeating three-dimensional structure called a crystal lattice. Ionic solids have high lattice energy, which is the energy required to separate one mole of an ionic compound into its gaseous ions. Lattice energy increases as charge increases and decreases as radius increases.
