If a system only has 1 object, the only energy it can have is kinetic energy. The system’s kinetic energy can change due to a non-zero net external work, which is described in the work-energy theorem

Wnet=ΔK{W_{net}= \Delta K}
. This amount of energy the work will transfer into the system is exactly how much the system’s kinetic energy will change by.
