2.4 European and Native American Contact
Section 1 of 7
European and Native American Contact
European conflicts with Native populations in the New World were a central aspect of the colonial era. While European nations sought to exploit the resources and lands of the Americas, their interactions with Native American tribes were complex, shaped by diplomacy, warfare, and shifting alliances. In many cases, European powers like the Dutch, French, English, and Spanish allied themselves with different Native groups, often using existing rivalries to advance their own colonial interests. At the same time, conflicts arose as Europeans encroached on indigenous lands and resources, leading to violent confrontations like King Philip’s War, the Pequot War, and the Pueblo Revolt.
